Canals
Built during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, the canals stretch throughout the winding streets of Amsterdam. With over 800,000 bicycles in the city, the canals are an ideal setting to rent a bike for a day of pedal-driven exploration. If you’d prefer to take in the sights from the water, you can tour the canals via boat for a floating showcase of centuries-old architecture, canal houses and historical monuments.
Dam Square
The central hub of the city, the “Dam” is where you’ll find landmarks such as The Royal Palace, a 15th-century church known as the Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument. Previously, the square was home to the popular “I AM AMSTERDAM” sculpture before it’s relocation to the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The square’s notable buildings, frequent events and street performers make it a well-loved location within the city.
Art Museums
Amsterdam is home to many museums celebrating the art and culture of the country. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum are all located in what is known as “Museum Square.” A trip to the Rijksmuseum offers a lesson in art history with classic Dutch artists including Rembrandt featured in a collection of over one million works of art, while the Stedelijk is home to contemporary and modern pieces.
Shopping
Hidden in the middle of the canal belt is the De Negen Straatjes, known as the “The Nine Streets.” These quaint narrow streets overflowing with designer boutiques, vintage shops and cozy cafés form the city’s most photogenic micro-neighborhood.
